Practice Better's Template Library includes pre-built note templates that you can add to your portal and customize for your practice. Templates save you the work of building a note structure from scratch, so you can start documenting sessions faster. This article shows you how to find a note template, add it to your portal, and use it with your clients.

Adding a template does not send anything to clients: A note template you add appears in your Note Templates list. It does not create a form or a note for any client. To start a note from your template, see Using Your Note Template below.
- Pre-built templates cannot be shared with an access code: If you add a note template from the Template Library, you cannot share it with colleagues using an access code. Learn more in Sharing Note Templates With Colleagues →
Accessing the Note Templates Library
- Go to My Practice > Note Templates.
- Click Create from template. Practice Better opens the Templates library.
You can also open the library directly from the Templates option in your main navigation. In our new navigation, hover over the More Options (3 dots) and select Templates.
Adding a Note Template to Your Portal
- Find a note template in the list. Click View to preview its sections and formatting.
- Click Add Template to add the template to your portal.
- In the success message pop-up, choose what to do next: click Done to keep adding templates from the library, click View my notes to go to your Note Templates page, or click Edit to open the note template editor right away.
💡 Tip: Practice Better adds a library template to your portal as an independent copy. You can edit your copy, and the changes you make do not affect the library original.
Using a Template Code
If you received a template code from a colleague using Practice Better, you can unlock their template from the Templates library.
- Click Unlock Templates at the top of the Templates page.
- Enter the access code in the field provided and click Submit.
- Review the Unlocked Templates section in the library, and add the template to your portal the same way you add any other template.
Using Your Note Template
Review your note template before you use it with clients. Templates can include placeholders, which are tokens such as %BASIC_INFORMATION%. When you create a note from the template, Practice Better replaces each placeholder with the matching information from your client's file.
To create a note for a client from your template:
- Go to My Practice > Note Templates.
- Click Create for client next to the template.
- Select a client from the pop-up to continue.
You can also start a note from a client's Notes & Recordings section, your My Bookings page, or a Session Details page. Learn more in Building and Using Note Templates →
