You decide how clients pay for your services: collect payment right at booking, invoice them later, or simply display your fee with no payment involved. This article walks through setting Payment Options on a service, and how that setting connects to your payment processor, packages, and invoicing.

Before You Begin
- You'll need a payment processor linked to your account before you can suggest or require payment at booking. Without one, you can still hide or display your fee, but Practice Better can't collect payment automatically. Learn more about Processing Payments with Practice Better Payments →
- Payment Options control what happens on your public Bookings Page, when clients book themselves. They work a bit differently when you book a session for a client yourself; we'll cover that in [Using Payment Options] below.
Setting Up Payment Options for a Service
Adding Your Pricing Details
- Go to My Practice > My Services, then click Edit on the service you want to update.
- Choose a Pricing Model: Fixed Fee for a one-time cost, or Ongoing for recurring pricing.
This choice affects which payment plan options are available further on. Learn more in Setting Up Payment Plans in Practice Better →
- Enter your Fee. Your currency is inherited from your practice settings by default, but you can update it for this specific service if needed.
- Add a SKU if you'd like one. SKU stands for Stock Keeping Unit; it's an optional way to track this service across your invoicing and conversion reports, and clients never see it.
Choosing Your Payment Options
Under Payment Options, choose a setting for your Public Bookings Page and, separately, for your Client Portal. You can use the same setting for both or set them differently, depending on how you want each audience to experience booking.
-
Hide Fee: No fee is shown or charged for your service.
-
Display Fee (No Payment Required): Clients see the fee but aren't prompted to pay.
-
Suggest to Pay at Booking: Clients see the fee and can choose to pay now or later. If they choose to pay later, you can create an invoice yourself to collect payment afterward. Requires a linked payment processor.
-
Require to Pay at Booking: Clients must pay when they book. Requires a linked payment processor.
📍 Note: Changing these settings only affects new bookings going forward. Any existing bookings or invoices stay exactly as they are.
Setting Advanced Options
Click Set Up Payment Options or click the Advanced Options tab near the top of your Service setup page:
Here you can fine-tune a few more things:
-
Require billing information without payment: If you set the Payment Options to Hide fee, Display Fee, or Suggest to Pay, you can still collect a client’s payment information when they schedule through your booking page. Enable this option with Require to Pay to charge the client and also store their payment information in your client record. -
Tax Override: Check this box to apply a specific tax when processing payments from your public Bookings Page. Leave it unchecked to use the default tax settings from your Invoice & Payment Settings. Learn more about Configuring Invoice, Currency, and Tax Settings →
- Payment Plans: Split a fee into a deposit and installments instead of collecting it all at once. Learn more about Setting Up Payment Plans in Practice Better →
How Payment Options Work with Packages and Programs
Payment Options work the same way for services, packages, and programs; you'll find the same settings in each one's edit screen. One nuance to keep in mind: when a service is sold as part of a package, it inherits the package's Payment Options rather than using its own individual setting. Set Payment Options at the package level for any service you sell that way. Learn more about Working with Packages in Practice Better →

What Clients Experience When Booking Online
When a client completes a booking through a service set to Require to Pay and you have a payment processor linked, Practice Better automatically creates a paid invoice that you can reference in the client record in your practitioner portal.
Payment happens before the final step of booking. Clients enter their payment information first, then move to the last step of the booking flow, where they accept your Terms and Conditions and submit their booking request. What Happens When You Book a Session for a Client
Payment Options apply to your public Bookings Page, not to sessions you book yourself from the Practitioner Portal. Learn more about Booking Client Sessions from the Practitioner Portal →
When you book a session for a client, Practice Better shows a pop-up with suggested next steps, including an option to create an invoice right there. If you dismiss the pop-up, don't worry, you can still create an invoice afterward from your client record or the Session Details page.
