Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) cards require a specific merchant classification to ensure that card providers can identify your services as eligible for these funds. This article explains how HSA and FSA card acceptance works with Practice Better Payments and Square.

HSA and FSA Cards with Practice Better Payments
HSA and FSA cards are designated for use with specific types of businesses to confirm that the services being paid for are eligible under each program. To support this, card providers require that your account have a Merchant Category Code (MCC) that corresponds to medical services.
Practice Better requests an MCC of 8099 (Medical Services and Health Practitioners) for your account at the time of onboarding. However, various factors in your payments activity can impact a periodic review from Stripe and may affect your MCC code. Because of this, HSA and FSA card acceptance is not guaranteed.
⚠️ Important: Even when your account is configured to accept HSA and FSA cards, individual transactions can still be declined. Card issuers retain the right to authorize or decline any payment, including HSA and FSA cards.
Requesting a Review
You can request that Practice Better submit a review for HSA and FSA card configuration at any time. This applies to both new and existing accounts. To submit a request, email our payments team at payments@practicebetter.io
📍 Note: If your clients experience unexpected HSA or FSA card declines, contact our payments team at payments@practicebetter.io and we'll review your account configuration.
HSA and FSA Cards with Square
If you use Square for payment processing, HSA and FSA card acceptance is managed directly by Square. You'll need to contact Square to ensure your account is configured before accepting these payments through Practice Better.
