If you're on a Mac, you may need to adjust your Security & Privacy settings before your camera, microphone, or screen sharing will work during a Telehealth session. This applies whether you use Practice Better's built-in Telehealth or the Zoom desktop app for Telehealth.

Before You Begin
- Compatible for: Practice Better Telehealth (in a supported browser) and Zoom for Telehealth (Zoom desktop app).
- Supported browsers: Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, and Microsoft Edge.
- Supported macOS versions: macOS 10.14 (Mojave) or later.
- A note on naming: Apple renamed System Preferences to System Settings starting with macOS Ventura (13). The steps below work the same either way; just look for Privacy & Security in whichever app your version uses.
📍 Note: These are macOS system settings, separate from the permission pop-up your browser shows the first time you join a session. If you've completed the steps below and your browser still prompts you for camera or microphone access, that's expected. See Enabling Camera and Microphone Permissions → for what to click.
Enabling Camera, Microphone, and Screen Recording Access
This is a one-time setup per device. Once granted, these permissions stay in place unless a macOS update resets them.
- Open the System Settings (or System Preferences) app.
- Go to Privacy & Security.
- Click Camera, then enable access for your browser or the Zoom app, whichever you use for Telehealth. If it isn't listed, use the plus (+) button to add it.
- Click Microphone, then enable access the same way.
- Click Screen & System Audio Recording (called Screen Recording on older macOS versions), then enable access the same way.
- Restart your browser or the Zoom app for the changes to take effect. A restart of your computer may also be required.
Re-Enabling Permissions After a macOS Update
macOS updates sometimes reset these permissions, even if you've already set them up. If your camera, microphone, or screen sharing suddenly stops working after an update, start here instead of adding the toggle again.
- In Privacy & Security, open the setting that stopped working (Camera, Microphone, or Screen & System Audio Recording).
- Select your browser or the Zoom app from the list, then click the minus (-) button to remove it completely. Toggling the switch off and back on usually won't work.
- Click the plus (+) button to add your browser or the Zoom app back to the list.
- Fully quit and reopen your browser or the Zoom app for the change to take effect. We also recommend restarting your Mac.
Still Having Trouble?
Granting these permissions unblocks your device. It doesn't start a session or a screen share on its own. Once you're set up here:
