Accessing the DrFirst Integration
You can access your DrFirst portal in a few places in Practice Better.
- Go to a Client Record > Medical History.
- To open your DrFirst portal, click one of the "Manage" buttons above the Medication History, Drug Allergies, or Prescriptions sections.
- Or, open a Client Hub and use the Manage Prescriptions button to launch your DrFirst portal.
- The DrFrist portal will open as a pop-up within your Practice Better portal so that you can manage your prescriptions all from Practice Better.
Read below for more details steps on creating prescriptions.
- Once you close the DrFirst pop-up, any new client data will be synced back to Practice Better, as indicated by the notification at the top right of your window.
- Practitioners can monitor DrFirst notifications, like messages from pharmacies, by adding the DrFirst Notifications widget to the Practice Better Dashboard.
Creating Prescriptions
There are three primary ways to create and queue prescriptions for your patients in DrFirst before sending them to a pharmacy.
Creating Prescriptions Manually
- Click Create New Rx (prescription). This let's you search for a medication.

In the search field, enter the drug you wish to prescribe. Select it from the auto-populated results or click the magnifying glass icon to view the full search results.
📍 Note: If you're unable to find a medication, try looking for the generic name and selecting the correct form.
- Choose the drug strength.

In the Prescribe Medication window, complete the required fields (marked with a red asterisk). When finished, click Review.
📍 Note for New York prescribers only: You must include the maximum daily dose for all controlled substances.
- Review your prescription for accuracy and click Save Pending Rx.
- Choose one of the following action buttons:
- Save Pending Rx: Adds the prescription to the Prescription Management section on the Patient Summary page for review and signature.
- Save and Add Rx: Saves the prescription as pending and returns you to the medication search panel to add more prescriptions.
- Back: Lets you edit your prescription details.
- Cancel: Cancels the prescription entirely.
Creating Prescriptions From Favorites
All Favorites can be accessed through the Star icon in the patient profile (next to Create New Rx).
This view shows:
- Org Favorites (includes Practice Favorites and Location Favorites)
- My Favorites
- Recent (recently prescribed medications in your practice)
When you see a favorite drug, you can:
- Click the drug name: Opens the Prescribe Medication window so you can adjust dosing before adding the prescription.
- Click the dose: Immediately adds the drug (with its preconfigured sig) to pending prescriptions for the current patient.
Alternatively, you can also access favorites:

Click the menu icon and then click Utilities.

Click Favorites.
- Select from the medications listed.
If the medication is not listed:

Click Add Favorite.

Enter the medication in the search field and click the magnifying glass icon.

Select the strength you would like to favorite.
- Complete the sig (dose) for the favorite, and select Save.
Renewing Prescriptions
You can renew an active medication from the Medications panel on the patient’s summary page.
- Open the patient’s summary page and go to the Medications panel.
- Under Active Medications, check the box next to the medication(s) you wish to renew, then click the Renew icon from medication to renew multiple prescriptions.
- Alternatively, click the Renew icon in the Actions column for that specific medication.
Sending Prescriptions
Once you have created or queued your prescriptions, you're ready to send them to the receiving pharmacy.
- Go to the patient’s profile.

Scroll down to the Prescription Management section.
- Check the box next to each prescription you want to send.
- If you are a provider, enter your Signature Password.
- Choose one of the following options to complete the prescription:
- Send: Sends the prescription electronically to the pharmacy.
- Send & Print: Sends electronically and prints a watermarked (non-legal) copy for your records.
- Print don’t Send: Prints the prescription without sending.

Sign don’t Send: Signs the medication and adds it to the patient’s active medication list, but does not send it to a pharmacy.
- If you are sending a controlled substance, you will be prompted to enter your EPCS Passphrase and a one-time pin from an authenticator (also known as a fob, token, or authenticator app). Learn more.
